Today’s architect works in a drastically altered landscape. Characterized by a plethora of information, rapid technological change and a pervasive feeling of uncertainty, the designer’s role in creating meaningful artifacts that symbolize a culture must clearly distinguish between the figure of meaning and the ground of context. It is through the lenses of this new context that we begin to see the role of today’s designer. The constancy of change encourages one to examine the traditional boundaries of professions, including architecture, as they increasingly overlap. In understanding that disciplines are not static, but rather continuously in dialogue with changing environments, we must, through our work, probe the following question: How do we give meaning to artifacts while relating its design to a context that changes with time? The life of a building may inhabit the activities for many generations, adapting to changing needs and circumstances while becoming a symbol for something that extends beyond its physical domain. Therefore, in leading the dialogue to this essential question of boundaries, it is the designer’s role to elevate the discourse by expanding the circle of discussion. The power of an idea resides in the architect’s ability to envision, communicate, and enhance our collective understanding through his or her body of work.
오늘날 건축가는 급변된 조경에서 작업한다. 정보의 과다, 급속한 기술변화, 충만한 불확실성으로 특징되는 작금에, 디자이너의 역할은 의미의 주체와 문맥의 배경 사이를 명확히 구분하여, 문화 표상의 가치있는 인공물을 만들어야 한다. UnitedLAB은 이 새로운 맥락의 렌즈를 통하여, 오늘의 디자이너의 역할을 보고자 한다. 지속적 변화는, 건축이 그 경계가 점점 모호해지듯, 건축을 포함한 전통적 전문성을 재정의케 한다. 전문분야는 더이상 정지되어있지 않고, 오히려 끊임없이 변화하는 환경과의 관계속에 있음으로, 우리는 작업을 통해, 다음과 같은 질문을 탐침한다: 현상적 맥락에서, 디자인을 통해 작업의 의미를 어떻게 부여할 수 있는가? 건물의 존재는, 그 물리적 영역을 초월한 개체의 상징이 되며, 변하는 요구와 환경에 적응해 온, 오랜 세대의 활동속에 있다. 그러므로, 이 경계들에 대한 필수적 질문과 대화를 이끔으로써, 토론의 범위를 확대하고 담론을 고무하는 것이 UnitedLAB의 역할이다.

UNITEDLAB Associates is a vibrant, multi-disciplinary design studio established in 2015 by Sang Dae Lee, providing comprehensive architecture, landscape, and urbanism services. Operating in both New York City and Seoul, our approach embraces diverse perspectives, enriching the creative design process. Our core philosophy, SCAPE, explores the intricate relationship between society, ideology, and the built environment, focusing on the well-being of inhabitants.
SCAPE views social landscapes and urban patterns as a living system, considering both the physical environment and its people. Beyond the physical domain, societal influences, ideologies, economics, and metaphysical idiosyncrasies shape our design work and research. We analyze, research, design, and envision future city scenarios, pushing the boundaries of traditional typologies and uniting theory with practice.
We have undertaken a wide range of projects, from small-scale pavilions to large-scale townhouses, regeneration parks, and visionary urban plans. Our work addresses the challenges of a resource-limited future, with a focus on social, environmental, and economic sustainability.
