reVIVE: Lester Park

Traditionally, we think of a room as a small space defined by walls, floor, and ceiling but the concept of “room” can also be applied to public space. In this case, the urban room is a place where people come together and stay for a while, as opposed to just a means for getting from point A to point B. Currently, Lester Park fails to meet the varied and growing needs of the Ogden community. More than simply a city block containing trees and grass, Urban Room capitalizes on its potential to become a vibrant and inclusive urban space as well as a symbolic landmark for the city of Ogden.

A Park to LEARN + MEET + PLAY
Urban Room was designed around three key activities: LEARN, MEET, and PLAY. The three interlocking spaces are organized around the perimeter with a public plaza / event space intersecting all three activity zones in the center.

LEARN
Existing brick and mortar educational spaces like the library and senior center are supplemented by informal learning spaces like the urban farm, learning garden, and community workshop spaces. These new amenities along with existing facilities will provide opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together to learn in an open and inclusive environment.

URBAN ROOM: Junction Park in Junction City

MEET
The Great Lawn is a place where people can come to sunbathe, have a picnic, read a book or, during special events, come together in large groups. The lawn is also connected to the amphitheater where visitors can enjoy special events like live concerts, Shakespeare in the park, etc. The Great Lawn is easily accessible from the east edge of the park.

PLAY
With different zones defined for different ages, this is a place where kids of all ages can come to play. These activities enliven the park and contribute to a more energetic and fun atmosphere. These spaces are accessible from the northeastern bike rack.

CROSS-SPACES
These areas serve a variety of events and activities during all four seasons. The main plaza in the center contains a fountain in the warmer months and is converted to a skating rink during the winter. The intermediate plaza hosts community events like the farmer’s market, food trucks, book fairs, music festivals, etc. The pavilion in the plaza is a sculptural focal point while also providing comfort stations and a café as well as maintenance and management facilities.
